Patient was educated on side effects of using dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors as follows:
- Stomach upset
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most common side effects of using dipeptidyl peptidase inhibitors.
- Hypoglycemia
- Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors can increase the action of incretins, contributing to increase in insulin secretion, thereby reducing the blood sugars.
- These medications can sometimes result in episodes of serious hypoglycemia.
- Muscle pain
- These medications can sometimes increase risk of muscle and skeletal pains and fatigue.
- Fluid retention
- Though not common, these medications can sometimes result in fluid retention and patients can present with edema, weight gain, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, and fatigue.
- Acute pancreatitis
- A rare, but serious side effect of use of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors include a severe upper abdominal pain, radiating to the back, along with nausea and vomiting.
- Acute renal failure
- A serious, but rare side effect of use of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors include acute renal failure, with gross reduction in urine volume or absolutely no urine formation.
