Patient/caregiver was educated on the precautions to be observed while taking xarelto as follows:
- Evenly space out the doses of xarelto and take the dose at the scheduled time every day. Keeping to the schedule of xarelto intake helps to avoid forgetting the medication.
- Also, maintaining a schedule for anticoagulant intake will help maintain the blood uniformly thin. This prevents the risks of extra thinning with consequent bleeding and thickening of blood with consequent clot formation.
- A lot of OTC products with vitamin K, prescription antibiotics, blood thinners, and other medications can influence the activity of xarelto in the body. So, be sure to mention your physician and pharmacist regarding your history with xarelto and check with them regarding safety, in the event you are being started on any new medications.
- Do not discontinue taking this medication without recommendation by your doctor. Abrupt withdrawal from xarelto intake can result in clot formation and consequent DVT, pulmonary embolism, and development of stroke.
- Your physician could change the dose of xarelto, based on the lab results for thinning of blood or side-effects developed. So, maintain compliance with follow-up physician appointments, as scheduled. Be accommodative to the plan of frequent dose changes, until you show an optimum response.
