Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using tamsulosin as follows:
General constitutional side-effects
- Tamsulosin use can sometimes result in common general constitutional symptoms such as, nausea, vomiting, mild skin rash, and abnormal taste.
- These constitutional symptoms can be self-limiting and resolve in a week or two. Taking tamsulosin with a small snack can help avoid having unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms with the medication.
General allergic reactions
- Tamsulosin use can result in general allergic reactions, such as, skin rashes, hives, and itching.
- Some patients can present with symptoms of angioneurotic edema, such as, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips, throat, and tongue, with consequent difficulty breathing.
- Seek emergency medical help for such findings, especially with difficulty breathing, for any appropriate measures to be considered.
Hypotension
- Tamsulosin use can result in relaxing the blood vessels and contributes to lowering the blood pressure and episodes of hypotension.
- Individuals can increasingly present with episodes of dizziness, confusion, and prevent any falls and accidents.
- The risk for hypotension could be even more, if you are also taking any other antihypertensive medications.
- Sudden changes in position can significantly increase the episodes of dizziness and confusion.
Priapism
- Tamsulosin use can rarely result in painful and prolonged erection of penis with dysfunctional ejaculation and sexual dysfunction.
- Stop using tamsulosin and report the finding to the physician immediately, for any appropriate measures to be considered.
