Patient was educated on the side effects of using Mineral Oil as follows:
- Pruritus Ani
- Seepage of Mineral Oil from the anus, especially if taken in higher doses, can result in itching and irritation of the skin around the anal orifice.
- This can sometimes progress to anal lesions that are difficult to heal and get repeatedly infected, which is a bothersome complaint.
- Poor absorption of other medications
- Mineral Oil can reduce the absorption of many prescription medications, thus compromising the therapeutic effects of prescription medications.
- Space lubricant laxatives out by at least 2 hours from other medications.
- Loss of urge
- Prolonged use of Mineral Oil may result in one losing the natural urge of having a bowel movement.
