Patient was educated on the side effects of using Meloxicam as follows:

  1. Gastric ulcers
  • Reduced synthesis of protective prostaglandins in the stomach, secondary to intake of Meloxicam, can lead to increased exposure of the stomach lining to the action of gastric acid, leading to erosion of gastric mucosa and development of gastric ulcers.
  • But, this effect of Meloxicam can be very less in intensity compared to other standard NSAIDs like Diclofenac Sodium, as Meloxicam has a very little inhibitory influence on COX-1 in the gastrointestinal tract and is more selectively inhibitory on COX-2 in inflamed tissues.
  1. Edema and weight gain
  • Reduced renal function, secondary to Meloxicam intake, can contribute towards compromise in filtration of blood, leading to reduced formation of urine and fluid back up in the body.
  • Increased fluid volume in the circulation can result in further elevation of blood pressure.
  • Fluid accumulation in the body outside the circulation can result in edema and weight gain.
  1. Central nervous system findings
  • Meloxicam use can sometimes result in severe dizziness, confusion, and hallucinations.
  1. Skin rash
  • Meloxicam intake can result in dermatitis and skin rash with blister formation.
