Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Lipitor as follows:

Compromised renal function

  • Use of Lipitor carries a small chance of damage to the skeletal muscle.
  • This can result in breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue.
  • Protein molecules released into the blood from this skeletal muscle injury enter the kidney to be eliminated in urine.
  • But, as these molecules are large, they will not be filtered through the kidneys into the urine and get blocked, thus damaging the kidneys and leading to kidney failure.
  • Notify your doctor, if you experience any unexplained muscle pain, malaise, and weakness, or symptoms of compromised renal function, such as, sudden reduction in the urine volume, fluid retention, edema, abnormal weight gain, and concentrated dark urine.

Poor blood sugar control

  • Lipitor can lead to poor blood sugar control in diabetics and so, can precipitate episodes of elevated blood sugar.
  • Diabetics should closely watch their blood sugar readings and observe compliance with the dietary limitations prescribed.
  • Any consistent exacerbation of blood sugar readings must be reported to the physician, for any changes in plan of care to be considered.

Central nervous system and musculoskeletal effects

  • Lipitor use can sometimes result in episodes of confusion and forgetfulness.
  • Lipitor use can also result in exacerbation of joint and other skeletal pains.
