Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using isosorbide mononitrate as follows:
- General allergic reactions
- Isosorbide mononitrate use can result in general allergic reactions, such as, skin rashes, hives, and itching.
- Some patients can present with symptoms of angioneurotic edema, such as, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips, throat, and tongue, with consequent difficulty breathing.
- Seek emergency medical help for such findings, especially with difficulty breathing, for any appropriate measures to be considered.
- General constitutional side-effects
- Isosorbide mononitrate use can sometimes result in common general constitutional symptoms such as, nausea, vomiting, and mild skin rash.
- These constitutional symptoms can be self-limiting and resolve in a week or two.
- Taking isosorbide mononitrate with a small snack can help avoid having unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms with the medication.
- Symptoms of hypotension can occur secondary to arterial and venous vasodilation. Accommodation of more blood in the peripheral blood vessels can reduce blood supply to distant vital organs, such as, brain and result in symptoms such as, dizziness, headache, and feeling lightheaded.
- Patients can present with a rapid heart rate, as a compensatory measure for the reduced blood pressure.
- Dilation of blood vessels in the peripheries can sometimes increase the risk for angina and chest pain, as more blood is pooled up in the extremities, thus reducing blood supply and oxygen delivery to the heart muscle.
