Patient was educated on the side effects of using Colace as follows:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Nauseating sensation with feeling of vomiting is a very frequent side effect of Colace, especially the liquid form of Colace.
- So, taking Colace along with some fruit juice or soda can help to avoid the nausea.
- Diarrhea and dehydration
- Colace sometimes causes excessive laxative effect, resulting in diarrhea.
- This can result in excessive fluid and electrolyte loss, leading to dehydration.
- Excessive fluid loss in the stool can result in low fluid volume and symptoms of dehydration.
- Abdominal discomfort
- Colace adds more water to the stool and can give rise to an unpleasant bloating sensation, abdominal discomfort, and cramping.
- Bloating and gas production
- Colace, especially the liquid form, give rise to an unpleasant bloating sensation and flatulence.
- If these unpleasant symptoms are too bothersome, change in plan could be made by trying other laxatives.
- Rectal bleeding
- Colace can on occasions lead to episodes of rectal bleeding.
- This finding must be immediately reported to the physician and the Colace is to be discontinued, until consult with the physician.
- Starting back on Colace must be only on your physician recommendation.
