Patient was educated on the side effects of using Amphotericin B as follows:
- Pain and inflammation
- Pain and inflammation at the site of injection is most common side effect to Amphotericin B use.
- Nausea and vomiting
- This is the most common side effect of Amphotericin B. Taking the antibiotic with some food can minimize the effects of nausea and vomiting.
- Diarrhea
- Amphotericin B use can result in diarrhea and loss of electrolytes from the body.
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Amphotericin B can precipitate irregular heartbeats, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias in individuals with history of cardiac arrhythmias.
- Individuals with history of chronic disturbance in serum magnesium and potassium ions are also at increased risk for arrhythmias with Amphotericin B.
- Also, individuals taking Lasix are at increased risk for losing potassium, thus setting the ground for life-threatening arrhythmias, upon taking Amphotericin B.
