Patient/caregiver was educated on foods to avoid/observe moderation with 2-gram sodium diet as follows:
- Avoid or observe strict moderation with all processed/cured/smoked/cold cut deli meats such as, hot dogs, sausages, ham, corned beef, bologna, salami, bratwurst, blood sausages, jerky meats, smoked fish, caviar, and liverwurst, as loads of salt are added to them during the processing and curing. Even while choosing to eat processed/cured/smoked/cold cut deli meats, pick the products with the label, reduced or low sodium.
- Among fresh meat, avoid or observe moderation with sources inherently highly rich in sodium content, such as, meat from turkey, pork, and veal. Avoid or observe strict moderation with consumption of organ meat, such as, chicken liver, beef heart, and beef tongue, as organ meat is also inherently very high in sodium content. With meat, prefer fresh lean meats of chicken, beef, lamb, and fish, to be compliant with the recommendation for limited salt intake.
- Avoid or observe strict moderation with all canned meats, such as, canned beef, canned chicken, and canned pork, as they are high in added salt content, to increase the shelf-life of the product on the store aisles. Even while choosing to pick canned meat items from the aisle, pick the products with the label, reduced or low sodium.
- Loads of salt could be added for flavor, to the nuts and seeds mostly consumed as snack. Avoid all salted versions of nuts and seeds for snacking. Select from the products that are raw or roasted, to help compliance with limited salt intake recommendation.
