Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to be considered for compliance with 2-gram sodium diet recommendation as follows:
- Among fresh meat, prefer lean meats of chicken, beef, lamb, and fish, as they are low in salt content compared to fresh sodium rich meat from turkey, pork, and veal.
- Avoid or observe strict moderation with all canned meats, such as, canned beef, canned chicken, and canned pork, as they are heavily loaded with sodium, to increase the shelf-life of the product on the store aisles. Even while choosing to pick canned meat items from the aisle, pick the products with the label, reduced or low sodium.
- Organ meats, such as, chicken liver, beef heart, and beef tongue are high in sodium content. Avoid or observe strict moderation with consumption of organ meat, to be compliant with the recommendation for limited salt intake.
- While picking nuts and seeds, avoid all salted versions, to observe compliance with limited salt intake recommendation. Select from the products that are raw or roasted.
- Many alternative forms of the regular salt are currently marketed as healthier versions, such as, rock salt, sea salt, and garlic salt. All these forms of salt basically have the same nutritive value, sodium content, and so, are equally harmful. These alternative forms of salt also must be avoided, to observe compliance with limited sodium intake recommendation.
- Foods with low or no salt can initially taste bland, but your taste buds will accommodate to the new taste in due course of time. So, observe compliance with the recommendation made, despite the bland taste you have for your food initially.
