Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to be considered for compliance with 2-gram sodium diet recommendation as follows:

  1. Store bought broths and stocks used as the base for soups and stews or to flavor meat and vegetable dishes are very rich in added salt. While picking them, pick the products with the label, reduced or low sodium. While preparing them at home, by boiling bones or simmering meat, do not add any extra salt, to be compliant with limited sodium intake recommendation.
  2. Many sauces, breakfast cereals, and bakery products, bought ready to eat, contain extra added salt to enhance the flavor. Check on the labels before doing the purchase and choose low salt or no salt added versions of these food items, in order to be consistent with limited sodium intake recommendation.
  3. Many sauces and salad dressings contain a lot of flavor additives that are rich in sodium. Among condiments, avoid or observe strict moderation with products very high in salt content, such as, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, and ketchup. You can rely more on lemon juice, vinegar, or vinaigrette for dressing and flavoring, which can reduce the need for adding salt. While picking sauce for seasoning and dressings, select from the list of sauces low on salt content, such as, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, chili sauce, and lemon caper sauce. While choosing store-bought salad dressings, pick the products with the label, no salt added or reduced sodium or low sodium.
