Patient/caregiver was educated on role of sodium in the body as follows:

  1. Sodium, in association with other salts, such as, chloride and potassium, help with normal stimulation and excitation of the heart tissue. Optimal concentration of these salts is needed for normal stimulation of heart tissue and generation of cardiac impulse, which is essential for optimal heartbeat and cardiac function.
  2. Optimal concentration of sodium, chloride, and potassium salts is needed for normal excitation of nerves and conduction of the nerve impulses all over the body. This can help with experiencing various sensory stimuli, such as, touch, temperature, taste, pressure, vision, and hearing.
  3. Optimal concentration of sodium, chloride, and potassium salts is needed for normal function of the muscle tissue, helping with the optimal contraction and relaxation of all the muscles in the body.
