Patient/caregiver was instructed upon indications for restoril use as follows:
- Restoril, by enhancing the effects of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA, can contribute towards promoting sleep. So, it can be used in individuals with trouble falling/staying asleep and insomnia.
- By depressing the brain and spinal cord, promoting dizziness, and reducing the activity and alertness, restoril can help in reduce excitability and relieve symptoms of anxiety.
- Restoril by inhibiting the nerve impulses can help with reduced excitation of nerves, thus contributing to seizure control. Restoril can be used as an anticonvulsant, for seizure control, in combination with other antiseizure medications.
- But, restoril has more sleep induction potential than antianxiety and anticonvulsant actions, in comparison to other medications belonging to the same group, such as, oxazepam and diazepam.
- As restoril depresses the brain and spinal cord, it helps with reducing and weakening the impulses reaching out to the skeletal muscles from the brain and spinal cord. This can lead to reduced motor activity, relief of muscle spasms, promotion of skeletal muscle relaxation and rest.
- Restoril can also be used along with antipsychotic medications, such as, olanzapine and clozapine, to control mild agitation and anxiety in individuals with history of mania and bipolar illness.
