Patient/caregiver was educated on pathophysiology of corn as follows:

  1. Corn is a portion of thickened painful skin developed especially in response to prolonged excessive friction and pressure on the skin against any surface, such as, ill-fitting shoe or wearing shoe without socks
  2. The sensitive skin can respond to prolonged friction and pressure with development of a corn.
  3. Corn can present as a thick, hardened, & raised area of skin with some inflammation and can be tender to touch. Corns carry the risk of being infected by bacteria, with foul smelling drainage.
  4. Corns usually involve the skin on tops and sides of the toes and in between the toes. Corns can also involve the plantar surface of feet and toes.
  5. Corns are also likely to happen on the palm and fingers, especially in individuals performing manual labor.
