Patient/caregiver was educated on pathophysiology of corn as follows:
- Corn is a portion of thickened painful skin developed especially in response to prolonged excessive friction and pressure on the skin against any surface, such as, ill-fitting shoe or wearing shoe without socks
- The sensitive skin can respond to prolonged friction and pressure with development of a corn.
- Corn can present as a thick, hardened, & raised area of skin with some inflammation and can be tender to touch. Corns carry the risk of being infected by bacteria, with foul smelling drainage.
- Corns usually involve the skin on tops and sides of the toes and in between the toes. Corns can also involve the plantar surface of feet and toes.
- Corns are also likely to happen on the palm and fingers, especially in individuals performing manual labor.
