Patient/caregiver was educated on complications of psoriasis as follows:
- Autoimmune diseases: Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition, in which body’s own protective immune system becomes defective and damages the skin cells. Individuals with history of psoriasis stand an increased risk for presentation with conditions due to altered immune system, such as, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.
- Hyperlipidemia: Uncontrolled inflammation in individuals with recurrent psoriasis activation can contribute to altered fat metabolism. This can result in lowering of good cholesterol (HDL), elevation of triglycerides & bad cholesterol (LDL), and hyperlipidemia.
- Heart disease: Hyperlipidemia in individuals with uncontrolled psoriatic activity can contribute to increased risk for HTN. Deposition of lipid plaques in blood vessels of the heart can lead to coronary heart disease and increased risk for chest pain, myocardial infarction, and heart disease.
- Kidney disease: Chronic inflammation in individuals with uncontrolled recurrent psoriasis can result in damage to the function of other internal organs, such as, kidney. This can lead to progressively diminishing kidney function and chronic kidney disease.
