Patient was educated on how to prepare for the insulin shot as follows:

  1. Always check with your health care personnel regarding the safe levels of blood sugar, when you can administer your insulin.
  2. Always, check the expiry date of insulin before administering. If the insulin is expired, please discard the medication appropriately and use insulin that still is in good standing with regards to expiry.
  3. Insulin should be given at room temperature. If you had it in the refrigerator or ice bag, please take it out at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time of administration. Once you have started using a vial of insulin, it can be kept at room temperature for one month.
  4. Gather your supplies, such as, insulin syringes, needles, alcohol wipes, glucometer, strips, and a sharps container for used needles and syringes.
  5. Always check your blood sugar before administering an insulin shot. This is just to make sure that your blood sugar is not low, so that, administering insulin with low blood sugars, can get it further low and precipitate episodes of hypoglycemia.
