Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Neomycin as follows:

  1. Patients with history of poor balance are at increased risk for exacerbation of balance issues with Neomycin, leading to falls and accidents. Neomycin intake can cause vestibular damage and lead to exacerbation of the balance disorder. Senior citizens with poor balance taking Neomycin must observe a close watch regarding the same and report any changes with balance to the physician immediately.
  2. Patients taking Neomycin should closely watch for any exacerbation of symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, such as, altered sensations, pain and numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in the extremities. This should be immediately reported to the physician for a possible change in the plan of care to be considered.
  3. Neomycin should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with history of motor weakness and neuromuscular disorders, such as, myasthenia gravis and Parkinson’s disease. These individuals are at increased risk for slowdown of impulse transmission at neuromuscular junction, resulting in increased motor weakness, muscle twitching, and exacerbation of muscle spasms. Any symptoms of increased motor weakness and exacerbation of fatigue must be immediately reported to the physician.
  4. Neomycin should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with respiratory complaints, such as, asthma and COPD, as Neomycin use can result in respiratory muscle weakness with slowing of the respirations and shallow breathing. Any episodes of exacerbation of SOB, while taking Neomycin, must be immediately reported to the physician.
