Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Metronidazole as follows:

  1. Watch for symptoms of worsening peripheral neuropathy, such as, increasing pain and numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in the extremities. Report such findings to your doctor immediately for a change in infection control plan to be considered. Metronidazole should be discontinued and report to the physician for any occurrences of seizures.
  2. Metronidazole is significantly eliminated in urine. Individuals with compromised renal functions cannot eliminate Metronidazole and thereby, result in increased blood levels of the drug for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Metronidazole should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
  3. Noncompliance with Metronidazole intake for the complete schedule can result in ineffective infection control with chance of relapse of infection with increased vigor. This can also contribute towards emergence of drug resistant strains of bacteria, making infection control more difficult.
  4. Complete the course of the antibiotic that it was prescribed for. Do not give up on the antibiotic, against your doctor’s recommendation, even if the symptoms of infection are controlled.
