Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Meloxicam as follows:
- Meloxicam intake can result in photosensitivity and skin rash with blister formation. Avoid bright sunlight and tan parlors, while you are taking Meloxicam. Using a sunscreen can prevent the risk for photosensitivity.
- Observe compliance with any regular lab work ordered. As Meloxicam is metabolized by the liver and carries the risk for damage to the liver, hepatic function could be periodically monitored, to prevent risk for toxicity. Watch closely to report any symptoms of itching, jaundice with yellowing of skin and sclera, dark urine, altered metabolism with nausea and vomiting, pain in the right upper abdominal quadrant, and fatigue suggesting damage to the liver.
- Meloxicam is significantly excreted in the feces and urine. Individuals with biliary obstructions and compromised renal functions tend to retain the drug in the circulation longer, thus resulting in toxicity. Meloxicam should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals. Any symptoms of renal injury and altered kidney function, such as, altered levels of consciousness and reduced urine formation, should be closely watched for and reported to the physician. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of biliary stasis and obstruction, if any, and your safety with using Meloxicam.
- Do not change the dose on Meloxicam without consulting your doctor.
