Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Colace as follows:

  1. Do not use lubricant laxatives, such as, mineral oil with Colace. Concurrent use of both these laxatives can result in increased absorption of mineral oil into the body that gets deposited in various vital organs, contributing to their inflammation.
  2. Discontinue using Colace, if you experience any acute abdominal pain or rectal bleed.
  3. Since Colace adds large amounts of water to stool, caution must be exercised with regards to rehydration. Noncompliance with rehydration, especially in senior citizens, can lead to episodes of intense dehydration. A deliberate effort for rehydration should be made, especially in senior citizens, as they frequently present with diminished sensitivity to thirst and are likely to skip drinking water.
  4. Prolonged use of Colace may result in one losing the natural urge of having a bowel movement. Try not to use this laxative beyond one or two weeks, without doctor’s recommendation.
  5. Notify your doctor, if your constipation does not get any better or if it gets worse, while continuing to use Colace.
