Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Cefotaxime as follows:

  1. Cefotaxime intake can increase the risk for skin rash and photosensitivity. Individuals with history of photosensitivity and taking Cefotaxime should avoid natural and bright lights or use sunscreens, to prevent any photosensitive responses from developing.
  2. Watch closely for development of any opportunistic infections, such as, oral candidiasis with white patches in the mouth, to be reported to the physician.
  3. Observe compliance with any regular lab work ordered. Cefotaxime carries the risk for hepatic and renal damage and so, hepatic and renal function could be periodically monitored. Watch closely to report any symptoms of itching, jaundice with yellowing of skin and sclera, dark urine, altered metabolism with nausea and vomiting, pain in the right upper abdominal quadrant, and fatigue suggesting damage to the liver. Any symptoms of renal injury and altered kidney function, such as, altered levels of consciousness and reduced urine formation, should be closely watched for and reported to the physician.
  4. If you miss a dose, try taking it at the earliest notice of noncompliance. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the dose scheduled. Do not take an extra dose to try making up for the missed dose. Notify your doctor and other health care personnel regarding your dose noncompliance.
