Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Cefotaxime as follows:

  1. Discuss with your doctor regarding any previous allergic responses you experienced with antibiotics belonging to the Cephalosporins group, such as, Cefaclor, Cephalexin, and Ceftazidime.
  2. Patients with history of antibiotic associated diarrhea must be cautious about using Cefotaxime. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same. Report to your doctor regarding any persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, and blood or mucus in the stool. These findings could occur even weeks after discontinuation of Cefotaxime and must be reported.
  3. Cefotaxime carries the risk of causing dizziness and confusion. These responses can significantly increase, if Cefotaxime were taken with alcohol. Avoid taking Cefotaxime with alcohol. One should stay away from activities, such as, driving and operating heavy machinery, until they are used to the side-effects caused by Cefotaxime.
  4. Watch for symptoms of worsening peripheral neuropathy, such as, increasing pain and numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in the extremities. Report such findings to your doctor immediately for a change in infection control plan to be considered. Cefotaxime should be discontinued and report to the physician for any occurrences of seizures.
