Patient/caregiver was instructed upon physiological effects of synthroid use as follows:

  1. Individuals with low thyroxine levels can present with slow reflexes, slow thought process, and sluggishness. Supplementation with synthroid stimulates the cells of the nervous system and helps improve the reflex time, thought process, and activity.
  2. Individuals with low thyroxine levels can present with low heart rate and reduced force of contraction of heart, thus compromising the cardiac function and pumping of blood to all the vital organs of the body. By increasing the oxygen consumption in the heart cells, synthroid helps to increase the heart rate and force of contraction, thereby, restoring the normal cardiac function and blood supply to all the vital organs of the body.
  3. Individuals with low thyroxine levels can present with reduced digestion and uptake of nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract, which results in poor metabolism and low appetite levels. Supplementation with synthroid helps to increase the uptake and utilization of nutrients, which results in improved metabolism and appetite levels. This will also contribute to increased uptake and utilization of fat and cholesterol, thereby, contributing to lowering the fat and cholesterol levels in the blood. Restoration of body metabolism will also help towards calorie burning, energy production, and improve activity levels.
  4. Individuals with low thyroxine levels can present with reduced energy levels, reduced activity, and compromised endurance for physical activity. Supplementation with synthroid helps to increase the muscle metabolism, activity and endurance. Synthroid also contributes to build lean muscle mass and improve the motor strength. Synthroid also is needed for normal physiological muscle breakdown, repair, and recycling of protein.
