Patient/caregiver was instructed upon physiological effects of methimazole use as follows:
- Individuals with high thyroxine levels can present with rapid reflexes, restlessness, and anxiety. Methimazole use by inhibiting excessive thyroid hormone production can help with slowing of thought process, promote rest, and relieve symptoms of anxiety.
- Individuals with high thyroxine levels can present with palpitations, very rapid heart rate with increased contraction of heart, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, and hypertrophy of cardiac muscle, eventually compromising the cardiac function and pumping of blood to all the vital organs of the body. Methimazole intake, by inhibiting excessive thyroid hormone production, helps with reducing the rapid heart rate, normalizing blood pressure, and prevent rhythm disturbances of the heart. Methimazole use also helps prevent hypertrophy of the cardiac muscle and symptoms of heart failure from developing in individuals with excessive thyroid hormone production, and thereby, restore the normal cardiac function and blood supply to all the vital organs of the body.
- Individuals with high thyroxine levels can present with rapid digestion and uptake of nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract, which results in rapid metabolism and high appetite levels. Patients can present with weight loss, secondary to the rapid metabolism. Methimazole intake, by inhibiting excessive thyroid hormone production, helps with slowing the rapid metabolism and return the appetite levels to normal. By returning the metabolism to normal levels, methimazole use can slow the exhaustion of energy sources, reduce calorie burning and also help with stabilizing weight.
