Patient was educated on peritoneal dialysis as follows:

  1. Peritoneal dialysisis a procedure of cleaning the blood of fluid, salts, and other waste products, such as urea and uric acid, in patients with renal failure.
  2. Initially, this procedure includes a surgery to place a soft plastic tube or catheter in the abdomen. Sterile dialysis fluid called dialysate is introduced into the abdominal cavity through the catheter.
  3. This procedure uses peritoneum, a natural membrane lining the abdomen cavity, as a filter.
  4. The concentration of the dialysate fluid helps salts, urea, and excess fluid to be removed from the blood, using peritoneum as a filter.
  5. Once the filtering process is complete and the excess salts, fluid, and wastes are cleared from the blood, the dialysate fluid with all the impurities is drained out of the abdominal cavity through the same catheter.
