Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Tegretol XR as follows:
- Tegretol XR use can result in damage to the liver and hepatotoxicity. So, Tegretol XR must be avoided or administered with caution in individuals with history of compromised liver function, as it can result in further deterioration of liver function in these individuals. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of liver failure, if any, and your safety with Tegretol XR intake. Also, as Tegretol XR is mainly metabolized in the liver, the metabolism of Tegretol XR can be compromised, if liver function is deficient. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and consequent side-effects. So, Tegretol XR could be avoided in individuals with hepatic dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with frequent dose adjustments, periodical monitoring for liver function and development of any toxic symptoms.
- Tegretol XR use in expectant mothers could harm the unborn baby and result in birth defects. So, Tegretol XR use should be avoided during pregnancy and in women planning to get pregnant.
