Patient/caregiver was educated on the precautions to be observed while taking Carbatrol as follows:
- Carbatrol intake can increase the risk for skin rash and photosensitivity, in individuals exposed to sunlight. Individuals taking Carbatrol, especially those with history of photosensitivity, should avoid natural bright lights and tanning booths. Using sunscreens and protective clothing, when getting out in the sun, can help prevent any photosensitive responses from developing. Report any findings of skin rash, burning sensation of the skin, and photosensitivity to your physician immediately, for any needed measures to be considered.
- Carbatrol use can result in damage to the liver and hepatotoxicity. Individuals can present with severe nausea and vomiting, right upper quadrant abdominal pain, compromised body metabolism, and diminished appetite, and elevated bilirubin in the blood. Elevated bilirubin can result in yellowing of the eyes, intense itching, and dark yellow urine. Report any such findings to your physician immediately, so that, an appropriate alternative plan of care could be considered.
- Notify your doctor of any continuing episodes of seizures. Also, if Carbatrol is prescribed for control of other conditions, such as, bipolar disorder and neuropathy, notify your doctor of any worsening nerve pain and discomfort, or continuing symptoms of excitation and mania, so that, your dosage on the medication could be revised.
