Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Carbatrol as follows:
- Do not take Carbatrol, if you ever manifested any allergic responses to intake of Carbatrol or any other medications belonging to the tricyclic antidepressant group, such as, imipramine, amitriptyline, and nortriptyline. In the event of an allergic response with any of these medications, check with your physician regarding your safety with intake of Carbatrol.
- Carbatrol carries significant risk of bone marrow suppression and result in compromised production of blood cells from the bone marrow. This can lead to anemia, low white blood cell count, and diminished platelet count. Carbatrol is contraindicated in individuals with history of bone marrow suppression. Discuss with your physician regarding newly diagnosed or past history of bone marrow disorder or suppression, history of low blood cell counts, if any, and your safety with Carbatrol intake.
- Carbatrol intake can increase the risk for skin rash and photosensitivity, in individuals exposed to sunlight. Individuals taking Carbatrol, especially those with history of photosensitivity, are more prone to develop this response. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of skin rash and photosensitivity, if any, and your safety with Carbatrol intake.
