Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Tiagabine as follows:

  1. Do not take tiagabine, if you ever manifested any allergic responses to intake of tiagabine or any other medications used to control seizures and nerve pain, such as, Lyrica and Cymbalta. In the event of an allergic response with any of these medications, check with your physician regarding your safety with intake of tiagabine.
  2. Tiagabine use in expectant mothers could harm the unborn baby and result in birth defects. Tiagabine use could be avoided during pregnancy and in women planning to get pregnant.
  3. Tiagabine use, especially in individuals with history of anxiety and bipolar disorder, carries risk of deterioration of mood disorders and worsening of clinical symptoms of mood disorders. Individuals can present with complaints such as, feeling low, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, gross appetite changes, impulsiveness, agitation, aggression, and suicidal thoughts. So, tiagabine must be used with caution in such individuals, with periodical monitoring for symptoms of worsening mood and behavior.
  4. Tiagabine is mainly metabolized in the liver mostly to inactive metabolites, which are eliminated in feces and urine. Metabolism of tiagabine can be seriously impaired in individuals with history of compromised liver function. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and consequent side-effects. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of liver failure, if any, and your safety with tiagabine intake, if you are newly being started on the medication. Tiagabine could be avoided in individuals with hepatic dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with frequent dose adjustments, periodical monitoring for liver function and development of any toxic symptoms.
