Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Tegretol as follows:

  1. Tegretol use can sometimes result in damage to the kidneys and compromised renal function. So, Tegretol must be avoided or administered with caution in individuals with history of compromised renal function, as it can result in further deterioration of renal function in these individuals.
  2. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of renal failure, if any, and your safety with Tegretol intake.
  3. Also, as Tegretol and metabolites of the medication are mainly excreted by the kidneys in urine, the excretion of Tegretol can be compromised, if renal function is deficient. The metabolites of Tegretol can stay in blood circulation for longer time, and thus can contribute to increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity.
  4. So, Tegretol could be avoided in individuals with renal dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with frequent dose adjustments, periodical monitoring for renal function and development of any toxic symptoms.
