Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Topamax as follows:

  1. If you miss a dose, try taking it at the earliest notice of noncompliance. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the dose scheduled. Do not take an extra dose to try making up for the missed dose. Notify your doctor and other health care personnel regarding your dose noncompliance.
  2. Topamax use in expectant mothers could harm the unborn baby and result in birth defects. So, Topamax use should be avoided during pregnancy and in women planning to get pregnant. Women in the child bearing age group, having an active sexual life, and taking Topamax on a regular basis, must employ effective contraceptive measures in order to avoid getting pregnant.
  3. Fluid deficient states, such as, dehydration and diarrhea, can also result in significant loss of bicarbonate ions and are naturally prone for developing metabolic acidosis. Use of Topamax in such individuals can tip the acid-base balance easily, to favor a state of excess acid in the body and result in metabolic acidosis. Liberal intake of fluid, atleast 8-10 glasses a day, during Topamax intake, can contribute significantly to prevent development of metabolic acidosis.
