Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to prevent and manage scabies infestation as follows:
- Sulfur is an active ingredient in various prescription medications and lotions used to treat scabies. Observe compliance with administration of all prescription medications, as ordered. The medicated lotions can be applied on the entire torso, neck down, to let the medication stay for at least 8 hours before washed off. In severe cases of infection, your physician could choose to treat the entire household at the same time, to prevent any recurrences.
- Sulfur is also available OTC, used in products such as medicated soaps, ointments, and shampoos. These products can be used topically to help treat scabies infection. Check with your physician regarding the use of these products and their validity, as they apply.
- Intense itching and scratching of the skin can result in irritated skin that can be easily prone for secondary bacterial infections, thus complicating the treatment and outcome. Report to your doctor or other health care personnel regarding any signs and symptoms of bacterial infection at the affected skin site, such as, fever, pain & tenderness, warmth & redness, and foul-smelling discharge. Observe compliance with administration of antibiotics, if any prescribed, to control the secondary bacterial infection.
