Patient/caregiver was educated on indications for high fiber diet as follows:

  • Irregular bowel movements:
    • By absorption of water and swelling in size, insoluble fiber helps add bulk to the stool and turn the stool slightly solid.
    • By forming gel with water, soluble fiber helps softening of stool. Bulkier, soft, & solid stools are easier to eliminate, and thus fiber helps prevent development of constipation.
    • Addition of bulk to stool by insoluble fiber and turning the stool solid can also help individuals with loose stools and prevent worsening of diarrhea.
  • Poor intestinal health:
    • Fiber, by helping with stool softening, easy passing of stool, and constipation prevention can also help prevent complications, such as, development of hemorrhoids and intestinal bleeding, thus maintaining & promoting intestinal health.
  • Heart disease and high cholesterol:
    • Soluble fiber dissolves with water and forms a gel in the stomach and intestines.
    • Formation of gel by soluble fiber can slow the process of digestion of food and absorption of fats in the stomach and intestines.
    • This compromised digestion and absorption of fats with soluble fiber can contribute to reduced cholesterol levels in the body.
    • Reduced cholesterol levels with soluble fiber can help individuals with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, prevention of plaque development, and prevention of heart attack.
