Patient/caregiver was educated on role of fiber as follows:
- Stool softening and constipation management with fiber can also help prevent development of hemorrhoids and thus, maintain intestinal health.
- Absorption of water by fiber and formation of gel can slow the process of digestion of food and absorption of nutrients. By doing this, fiber can contribute to staying full longer and slowed absorption of sugars and fats in the diet.
- Staying full longer reduces the appetite, diminishes intake, and can help individuals with obesity in weight loss and attaining a healthy weight. This can also help individuals with diabetes in improving blood sugar control.
- Compromised absorption of sugars and fats with dietary fiber can contribute to improved blood sugar control and reduced cholesterol levels in the body.
- Fiber is also considered to help lower risk for colorectal cancer.
