Patient/caregiver was educated on role of fiber as follows:
- Fiber is a complex carbohydrate and is an essential component of diet. It is majorly found in plants and plant products.
- Fiber is richly available in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes.
- Human body lacks enzyme systems that can digest fiber. Since fiber is poorly metabolized and digested in the human body, fiber hardly contributes any to calorie count.
- Since, fiber passes through the stomach and intestines poorly digested and unabsorbed, it remains in the intestines.
- Fiber helps add bulk to stool and turn the stool solid, which can be easier to eliminate, thus preventing development of constipation.
- While passing through the intestines undigested, fiber absorbs water, turns into a gel, and thus softens the stool. Soft and solid stools formed with fiber intake are easier to eliminate, thus preventing development of constipation.
