Patient was educated on pathophysiology of asthma as follows:
- Asthma is a kind of immune or protective response of the airways, trying to protect the body from foreign particles and various allergens, such as, pollen, dust, and carbon.
- Asthma episodes can be acute or chronic.
- The smooth muscle in the respiratory passages reacts to the allergens in the air and various chemical mediators and inflame.
- As a response to the allergens, chemical mediators of inflammation are released. In response to chemical mediators, the wall of airways become swollen, which will narrow the airway. The airway produces increased mucus secretion during this period of inflammation. Also, the smooth muscle will undergo contraction leading to narrowing of airway.
- When the airways narrow, they prevent the further entry of foreign particles into the respiratory passages.
- When the mucus secretion is increased, the mucus will bind the foreign particles and will prevent these particles to be deposited in the lung, thus preventing any further damage to the lungs.
