Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while using Rivastigmine patch as follows:

  1. Rivastigmine patch use can result in increased bladder contractions, increased frequency of urination, and consequently contribute to increased fluid volume loss and hypotension. Rivastigmine patch use can also result in side-effects such as, increased sweating, which also can contribute to the fluid loss by other means. Individuals using diuretics for any reason can be at increased risk for excessive fluid volume deficit and low blood pressure with concomitant use of Rivastigmine patch. Proper hydration measures and compliance with fluid resuscitation recommendations can help with preventing fluid volume loss and episodes of hypotension. If you experience any further bothersome bladder contractions and polyuria, report it to your physician for further recommendations.
  2. Too low heart rate and/or blood pressure with use of Rivastigmine patch can result in increased drowsiness and confusion, thus compromising safety and increasing risk for falls and accidents. If the dizziness and confusion with use of Rivastigmine patch become bothersome, report it to your physician and other health care personnel, for any change in the dose or plan of care to be considered. Stay away from activities, such as, driving and operating heavy machinery, until you are used to the side effects caused by application of the Rivastigmine patch. Observing compliance with use of assistive devices can help prevent falls and accidents. Seek for increased caregiver availability and assistance, until you are used to the side effects caused by the patch.
