Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Rivastigmine patch as follows:

Gastrointestinal side-effects

  1. Increased acetylcholine activity with Rivastigmine patch use can result in increased salivation, nausea, and vomiting. Smelling ginger or citrus can help contain the unpleasant nausea and vomiting.
  2. Rivastigmine patch use, secondary to increased acetylcholine activity on the gut, can result in increased motility of the gut, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. These effects can be self-limiting and resolve in due course of time. Proper hydration measures and compliance with fluid resuscitation recommendations can help with preventing fluid volume loss.
  3. Rivastigmine patch use, secondary to increased acetylcholine activity on the gut, can result in increased acid production in the stomach, burning sensation in the stomach, and GERD. Individuals with history of peptic ulcers and GERD can be at increased risk for exacerbation of the conditions, following use of the Rivastigmine patch.

Other constitutional side-effects

  1. Increased acetylcholine activity with Rivastigmine patch use can also result in side-effects such as, increased sweating, which also can contribute to the fluid loss by other means.
