Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Namenda as follows:
- Namenda can induce some nausea and vomiting, when taken on empty stomach. Taking the medication with a glass of water and some food or snack can help avoid these unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms.
- The inactive metabolites of namenda along with the significant unmetabolized portion of the parent drug are excreted in the urine. Individuals with compromised renal function cannot excrete these compounds normally, which allows them to stay in blood circulation for longer time, resulting in toxicity and consequent side-effects. So, namenda must be used with caution in individuals with compromised renal function, with possible dose adjustments, periodical monitoring for renal functions, and close watch for development of any dangerous side-effects and toxicity symptoms with the medication.
- Periodically, labs could be ordered for evaluation of liver and renal functions. Observe compliance with any lab draws ordered.
- If you miss a dose, try taking it at the earliest notice of noncompliance. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the dose scheduled. Do not take an extra dose to try making up for the missed dose, as it can lead to overdose and toxicity. Notify your doctor and other health care personnel regarding your dose noncompliance.
