Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Exelon patch as follows:

  1. Exelon patch use can result in contraction of bronchial smooth muscle and increased effort of breathing. Individuals can present with progressively compromised endurance, increasing shortness of breath, and emergency situations, secondary to exacerbation of breathing difficulty. Individuals with history of asthma and COPD, following use of exelon patch, can present with exacerbation of the respiratory conditions and so, must be used with extreme caution. Close watch must be maintained for any evolving episodes of acute exacerbation of SOB and worsening effort of breathing.
  2. Exelon patch use can result in increased motility of the gut, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Exelon patch use can also result in increased acid production with burning sensation in the stomach, and promotion of GERD. These effects can be self-limiting and resolve in due course of time. Individuals with history of peptic ulcers and GERD can be at increased risk for exacerbation of the conditions, following use of the exelon patch and so, must be used with extreme caution. Close watch must be maintained for any unrelieving episodes of diarrhea, burning sensation in the stomach, and symptoms of GERD.
