Patient/caregiver was instructed upon Cinacalcet and mechanism of action as follows:

  1. Cinacalcet is a medication that acts as a calcimimetic, which mimics the action of blood calcium on various body tissues.
  2. Optimum calcium levels in the blood will reduce the stimulation for secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland.
  3. By mimicking the action of blood calcium, Cinacalcet will reduce the stimulation for secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland, thus resulting in reduced parathyroid hormone secretion.
  4. As parathyroid hormone secretion increases resorption of bone and release calcium from the bone into the blood, reduced parathyroid hormone secretion contributes to reduced resorption of bone and reduced release of calcium from the bone.
  5. By inhibiting the resorption of bone, Cinacalcet will prevent weakening and thinning of the bone and inhibit development of osteoporosis.
  6. Reduced calcium release from the bone into the blood, secondary to Cinacalcet use, also helps with preventing extreme elevation of calcium levels in the blood.
  7. Closely regulated optimum levels of calcium are needed for the normal function of vital organs, such as, heart, muscle, and nerves. Cinacalcet, by inhibiting extreme elevation of calcium levels in the blood, helps with maintaining normal physiological function of various vital organs in the body.
