Patient was educated on how to care for shunt in dialysis patients as follows:
- Do not wear any tight clothing over the area of shunt. Increasing the pressure over the area of the shunt can result in bursting of the shunt and severe hemorrhage.
- Do not sleep on the arm that has the shunt. Sleeping on the shunt can increase the pressure on the shunt and result in bursting of the shunt and severe hemorrhage.
- Do not wear any tight bracelets on the arm with the shunt. This can increase pressure on the blood vessels and restrict blood flow in the arm with the shunt, which can contribute to increased pressure in the shunt and consequent bursting of the shunt with severe hemorrhage.
- Check for the blood flow through the shunt every day. Report to your physician, if you do not the feel the thrill that you usually do, when you place your fingers over the site of shunt.
