Patient/caregiver was educated on choosing a proper hand sanitizer for COVID-19 as follows:
- Read through the label on the hand sanitizer bottle or container before you buy it.
- CDC recommends choosing only those hand sanitizers with at least 60% of alcohol content in them. Hand sanitizers with alcohol content less than 60% are not as effective against the infecting organisms.
- Also, read through the type of alcohol in the hand sanitizer, as some alcohols can be potentially dangerous.
- Use only those hand sanitizers that display the alcohol in them as ethanol/ethyl alcohol or 2-propanol or isopropanol.
- Avoid using hand sanitizers with labels reading “alcohol-free” or displaying the alcohol in them as methanol/wood alcohol or 1-propanol, as they can be harmful.
