Patient/caregiver was educated on choice of foods for consideration on GERD diet as follows:

  1. Prefer whole wheat grain bread and bakery products with low-fat additives, such as, bagels, waffles, and muffins.
  2. Choose low fat, fat free, and other alternatives on milk and milk products, such as, yogurt, butter milk, and cheese. Choose almond milk or soymilk versus regular milk.
  3. Prefer having less acidic fruits, such as, bananas, pears, apples, and berries.
  4. Choose soups made of lean meat and fresh vegetables, devoid of tomato and heavy cream.
  5. Observe compliance with low fat or fat-free dressings, powdered or liquid creamer, as desired or tolerated.
  6. Prefer having well-cooked or baked meat, fish, and eggs versus fried.
  7. Prefer having your vegetables, plain & fresh, baked or boiled versus fried, without any heavy cream added.
  8. Prefer having low garlic, onion, chilies, spice mixes, and jalapeno peppers on your diet. Prefer having oregano, sage, black pepper, basil, cumin, coriander, parsley, and other spices & herbs, as tolerated.
  9. Prefer desserts having honey, gelatin, pudding, or jam over cream-based cookies and cakes. Prefer hard candy over dark chocolate.
  10. Prefer having decaffeinated coffee and tea over regular coffee, regular tea, and chocolate drinks. Prefer having sparkling water over dark sodas. Prefer having red or white wine over beer.
