Patient was educated on Celiac disease as follows:

  1. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder involving damage to the mucosa (inner lining) of the small intestine, secondary to consumption of food items containing gluten.
  2. Individuals with this disorder are sensitive to gluten, which is a protein found in some grains. When gluten is consumed, the immune system responds to gluten and produces antibodies, which attack and damage the small intestinal mucosa.
  3. So, it is also called gluten-sensitive enteropathy.
  4. The mucosa of small intestine is thrown into folds called villi, which help with absorption of nutrients from the digested food.
  5. Since the mucosa is damaged, absorption of nutrients is compromised and results in symptoms of malnutrition.
