Patient was educated on Celecoxib and its mechanism of action as follows:
- Celecoxib is an NSAID.
- This medication acts by exclusively inhibiting only the cyclooxygenase enzyme 2 (COX-2).
- Celecoxib has no action on COX-1.
- Inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzyme at the site of injury results in reduced production of prostaglandins in the injured tissue.
- Since prostaglandins result in swelling of the injured tissues and amplification of the sensitivity to pain, reduction in the production of prostaglandins lead to reduced swelling and decreased sensitivity to pain, which results in control of pain and inflammation at the site of injury.
- Celecoxib is usually used to treat pain of a moderate to severe intensity, such as, arthritis, back ache, and post-surgical pain.
