Patient was educated on the causes of edema as follows:

  1. Edema occurs when fluid leaks out of tiny blood vessels or capillaries in your body.
  2. Edema can happen due to – excess of fluid in the circulation
  • Excess fluid in the circulation can result in high pressure in the tiny blood vessels.
  • This can result in fluid leaking into the tissues from the blood vessels.
  • This can occur in states of high blood pressure, eating too much salty food, and congestive heart failure.
  1. Edema can also happen due to- low protein / albumin in the blood
  • Albumin is a kind of protein we have in our diet.
  • It is also partly synthesized by the human liver as well.
  • Albumin is needed to maintain fluid in circulation.
  • Low albumin in the blood results in leaking of fluid out of capillaries and result in accumulation in surrounding tissues.
