Patient was educated on artificial pacemaker as follows:

  1. In patients, whose natural pacemaker is damaged or defective, an artificial pacemaker is implanted to replace the natural pacemaker, to initiate the regular heartbeat.
  2. This is a small battery operated device that helps the heart to beat in a regular rhythm.
  3. This has two parts in it, a pulse generator and leads.
  4. The pulse generator is a small battery powered unit that is implanted subcutaneously in the chest, through a small incision, usually under the collar bone. The battery is programmed to initiate electrical impulses to stimulate your heart to beat. These impulses are timed at regular intervals to mimic the natural pace of a healthy heart.
  5. The leads are small insulated electrical wires that are inserted through a large vein in the chest. On one end, the lead connects to the pulse generator and on the other end, the lead touches the heart wall. The impulse initiated by the generator will be transmitted to the heart through the leads and help the heart to contract.
