Patient/caregiver was instructed regarding advantages of timed voiding as follows:

  1. Timed voiding allows an individual to void and empty the bladder on a timely schedule, but not waiting for the urge to urinate.
  2. By encouraging to empty the bladder completely and frequently, this technique helps prevent any back-up of urine in the bladder and thus helps men with prostate enlargement.
  3. As the bladder is emptied frequently, timed voiding helps to prevent overfilling of the bladder, avoids leakage of urine, and reduces incontinence episodes in individuals with poor bladder control.
  4. Backing-up of urine is a very favorable factor for bacterial growth, which results in increased risk for UTI. By reducing the back-up of urine in the bladder, timed voiding helps prevent development of urinary tract infections.
  5. Reduced incontinence and urine leakage with timed voiding helps protect skin integrity and prevent skin breakdown in bedbound patients and senior citizens.
  6. Upon mastering the practice of timed voiding, individuals can slowly increase the time interval between two successive acts of voiding. This contributes to increasing the bladder capacity and reducing the frequency of urination. Reduced frequency of urination, especially during the night, can help individuals with severe nocturia and promote restful sleep.
  7. Timed voiding also avoids episodes of intense urge to urinate and thus can help avoid falls and accidents while rushing to the restroom.
